CMB: Exclusive Headies 2012 Review

Praiz and Toolz at The Headies 2012
Quite unfortunately i was not in town to cover the just concluded Hip Hop World Awards “The Headies” 2012 that held at the Expo Hall of Eko Hotel and Suites on the 20th of October 2012. From the number of artistes who turned up at the event to the quality of their performances, here’s how we rated the event:
TIMING: Like the culture with a lot of things in Nigeria, “African time” reared it’s ugly head again with the event not kicking till a little after midnight.
PERFORMANCES: Chidinma was the first performer on the night that saw a lot of average performances. The much anticipated performance of Davido had a lot of energy but lacked the much desired “spark”. Burna Boy and Dammy Krane stood out though and the duo were CMB‘s star performers on the night. Gaga Crazy Crooner Chuddy K failed to light up the stage with his hit single but he did a lot better with his other single “Brazilian Hair” which got the crowd lively.
AUDIENCE: The Headies is arguably the biggest music award in Nigeria. The tables at the event were totally sold out. However, the same cannot be said of the regular side with loads of empty seats.
MISSING IN ACTION: 2face, D’banj, Psquare, Mavin Stars, Ice Prince, Sound Sultan, MayD and Sarkodie were just a few of the notable absentees at the award. It was quite disappointing that the giants of the industry didn’t turn up even as some of them picked up awards.
HOSTS: MI and Omawumi did great justice to their roles as they took control of the event from start to finish. They engaged the crowd with games, banter and even had their own mock awards that cracked up the crowd.
BEZ: CMB had to single Bez out because of his nominations and his active role at the Headies. He sang his heart out when he performed his hit track “stupid song” with Praiz which was the only positive on a night. He wouldn’t want to forget as he didn’t pick up an award from his amazing six nominations.
